If you’re looking to enhance your Starlink setup with a more powerful or feature-rich router, bypassing the default Starlink router is a great option. This allows you to use your preferred third-party router while still maintaining Starlink’s internet service.
What Is Bypass Mode?
Bypass mode disables the Starlink router’s Wi-Fi functionality, allowing your third-party router to handle all networking tasks. This setup is ideal if you're seeking better performance, more control over your network, or advanced features like mesh networking.
Steps to Bypass the Starlink Router
1. Connect Your Third-Party Router
For Gen 3 Starlink (Standard Dish): Remove the rubber cover on the back of the Starlink router. Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into the WAN port of your third-party router and the other end into one of the Ethernet ports on the Starlink router.
For Gen 2 Starlink (Actuated Dish): You’ll need an Ethernet adapter to add an Ethernet port to the Gen 2 Starlink router. Connect the adapter to the Starlink router, then connect your third-party router to the adapter using an Ethernet cable.
For Starlink Mini: The Ethernet port is located on the back of the Mini dish. You can run a Starlink cable alongside the Mini’s power cable to route it wherever you want your router installed.
2. Enable Bypass Mode
Open the Starlink app on your device.
Tap on “Settings.”
Scroll down and select “Bypass Mode.”
Toggle the switch to enable bypass mode.
Confirm your choice when prompted.
Enabling bypass mode will disable the Starlink router’s Wi-Fi functionality. You’ll now rely on your third-party router for all networking tasks.
3. Configure Your Third-Party Router
Follow the setup instructions provided by your third-party router’s manufacturer. Typically, this involves connecting to the router’s default Wi-Fi network or accessing its web interface through a browser.
Set up your Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password.
Adjust any other settings as needed, such as security options and parental controls.
Once your third-party router is configured, it will handle all your networking needs, including Wi-Fi and wired connections.
Important Considerations
Power Supply: The Starlink router provides power to the dish. Bypassing the router does not affect this power supply.
App Access: After enabling bypass mode, you may lose access to the Starlink app’s features, such as rebooting the dish or checking for obstructions. Some users have found alternative methods to access these features, but functionality may be limited.
Reverting to Starlink Router: If you wish to revert to using the Starlink router, you’ll need to perform a factory reset. For Gen 3 routers, press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds. For Gen 2 routers, power cycle the router by unplugging and replugging the power cable six times.
Final Thoughts
Bypassing the Starlink router and using your own third-party router can significantly enhance your network’s performance and flexibility. Whether you're seeking better Wi-Fi coverage, advanced features, or more control over your network, this setup can meet your needs.
